This paper presents the first validation of total precipitable water obtained from thermodynamic profiles generated by the GOES-10 satellite retrieval algorithm for South America. The validation is performed using the original covariance matrix, made by CIMSS, and with a new covariance matrix adapted to the weather conditions of South America tropical region. The dataset used was a total of 1095 radiosonde observations located in the South America tropical region at 00 and 12 UTC, as well as thermodynamic profiles from 12h forecasts of the Global Weather Forecast Model T213L42, used as firstguess, and upwelling radiances of 18 infrared channels from the GOES-10 satellite for the period from July to November 2007. The results obtained with the new covariance matrix were better than with the old one. RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) and Bias reduced reasonably from 5.7 and 1.2 to 4.1 and -0.3 mm respectively. On the other hand correlation coefficient between the precipitable water values from the GOES-10 and radiosonde increased considerable from 0.75 to 0.88. This study shows that the GOES-10 soundings are able to provide support for many meteorological fields, mainly supplying the lack of data from upper air observations in good time and space scales.
